Minnesota State men’s basketball coach Matt Margenthaler has announced that Jamal Nixon will join the Maverick men’s basketball team in the fall of 2017.
All signings and transfers are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
A guard from Oak Park, Ill., Nixon has been a regular starter for the Fenwick High School boys basketball team since his freshman season. Nixon, who will begin his second season as a team captain, helped guide Fenwick High School to a Catholic League championship last season as a junior, en route to an appearance in Class 4A sectional championship appearance.
“Jamal does all the things that winners do right,” Margenthaler said. “He is a stat stuffer that’s for sure. At 6-5, he is so versatile on both ends of the court. I am very pleased to welcome Jamal and his family to our Maverick family.”
During his junior season, Nixon ranked first on the team in rebounds averaging 6.1 rebounds a game. He also ranked second on the team in assists, and third on the team in both scoring and steals. He also averaged four trips to the free throw line a game last season and started in all but one of Fenwick’s games.
The Mavericks open their 2016-17 season on Friday as they take on the Pittsburg State Gorillas at 5:00 p.m., in St. Cloud, Minn.
