The Minnesota State wrestling team enters the 2016-17 season rated eighth in the NCAA Super Region 3 Rankings, according to D2Wrestle.com.
St. Cloud State is rated first and followed by Upper Iowa, Maryville, Lindenwood, Augustana, McKendree, Northern State, Minnesota State, MSU-Moorhead, Mary, Central Missouri, Southwest Minnesota State, Minot State, Truman and Drury.
Maverick individuals ranking in the top eight of their respective weight classes included junior Tanner Mills (7th, 141), sophomore Daniel Close (7th/149), senior Adam Cooling (1st/174), junior Corey Abernathy (6th/184), senior Darick Vancura (5th/197) and junior Chris Zimmer (8th/285).
Cooling, who earned a third-place finish at last year’s NCAA DII national tournament, heads into his senior season owning a 72-21 career record. Close went 23-15 in his first season of college wrestling last year. Zimmer posted a 22-9 record in 2015-16, while Vancura was 14-14, Mills was 10-7 and Abernathy registered a 4-1 record.
Minnesota State opens its season Nov. 5 at the Rochester Community & Technical College Tournament in Rochester, Minn.
