Minnesota State Men’s Hockey freshman forward Nick Rivera has been named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week for his performance in two Maverick games last weekend.
A native of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and a product of Omaha of the United States Hockey League, Rivera contributed two goals and two assists as Minnesota State split a two-game league series at Alaska last weekend. Rivera scored the first two goals of his career and assisted on Max Coatta’s goal as the Mavericks skated to a 7-1 victory over the Nanooks Friday. His first goal, scored at 11:00 of the first period, was the first of his college career and proved to be the game-winner. He also drew an assist on a goal by Ian Scheid the next night in Saturday’s 4-2 loss. For the year, the 5-10, 190-lb., winger has two goals and three assists with six shots on goal and is +3 in six games played.
Rated #9 in this week’s USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, the Mavericks are 5-1-0 for 2016-17. Minnesota State continues WCHA action this week with a pair of league contests vs. Ferris State Friday and Saturday.
