The Minnesota State University volleyball team will open up NSIC conference play when it travels to Winona State, before opening its home schedule with Upper Iowa this week.
The Mavericks will begin conference action traveling to Winona State on Thursday with first serve set for 7:00 p.m. Minnesota State will then play its home opener against Upper Iowa on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
Mavericks at a Glance: Minnesota State enters the week with a 6-2 overall record and 0-0 record in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) action. The Mavericks are currently on a two match win streak with victories over Missouri S&T, 3-2, and Missouri Western State, 3-0.
By the Numbers: As a team this season, Minnesota State is averaging 13.5 kills per set to its opponents 11.2. The Mavericks are also posting 12.6 assists per set and 16.5 digs per set. Additionally, Minnesota State adds 37 aces in comparison to their opponents 30 and 54 total blocks to the competitions 31.
Climbing the Ranks: Two weeks into the season, Minnesota State is continuing to receive votes in this weeks AVCA Coaches poll. The Mavericks sit on the outside of the top-25 but claimed 23 votes. Concordia-St. Paul remains in the top spot with 48 first place votes for the second week in a row.
Impact Mavericks: Senior Krista Hassing leads the Mavericks with a team-high 111 kills (3.70 per set) while senior Sydney Geisness contributes 88 kills (3.14 per set). Senior Haley Fogarty is coming off a career-high 30 dig performance against Missouri S&T and ranks second in the NSIC with 169 digs (5.63 per set). Sophomore Autumn Risch also enters the week following a career-best 59 assist match against Missouri S&T and averages 10.53 assists per set.
Mavericks Home Openers: Minnesota State has won their last five home openers with the most recent win occurring last season against Winona State in which the Mavericks downed the Warriors, 3-2.
NSIC Openers: The Mavericks have won their last seven NSIC opening games since 2009. Minnesota State opened conference play last season defeating Winona State, 3-2.
Gold & Green All-Tournament: Senior Krista Hassing and senior Haley Fogarty were named to the Gold & Green all-tournament team last weekend. Hassing posted a career-high 28 kills while Forgarty notched a career-best 30 digs against Missouri S&T.
Scouting Winona State : Winona State is located in Winona, Minn., and has an overall record of 9-0 and a 0-0 conference record. The Warriors are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). In their most recent match, Winona State swept Augustana, 3-0, at the Pentagon Tournament. The Warriors climbed four spots to No. 9 in this weeks AVCA Coaches poll after being previously slotted at No. 13. Winona State is led by Joe Getzin, who enters his third season.
The last time these two schools squared off, Minnesota state won in a five set match, 3-2, at the Taylor Center. Since 2000, the Mavericks hold a 15-3 all-time record against the Warriors with the most recent loss occurring during the 2014 season when Minnesota State fell, 3-0.

The Peacocks are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Upper Iowa enters the week on a two-match win streak with victories coming over Northern Michigan, 3-2, and Lake Superior State, 3-0. The Peacocks are led by Aaron Nelson, who is in his fourth season.
The last time these two schools met, the Mavericks downed the Peacocks, 3-2, in Fayette , Iowa. Minnesota State leads the all-time series, 17-0. These two schools first played in 1983 and have squared off every season since 2004.
Through the first eight games of the season, Upper Iowa is averaging 11.9 kills per set and carry a .232 hitting percentage. The Peacocks are also averaging 11.03 assists per set and 14.48 digs per set. Upper Iowa added 41 blocks and 52 aces over the first eight games.
